How Right‑sizing works

The Project manager or Process engineer uses the filter function in the Right‑sizing tool to set the characteristics of the project. After filtering, the tool presents a list of all artefacts in the order of “Must do”, “Project specific”, “Could do” or “Not needed”. In addition, the tool shows, for each deliverable, the relevant instruction snippets explaining the extent of work for each of the phases, as shown below.



With this information the PM can understand what to plan for, and anyone in the team can understand when their job is done. The focus is on incrementally expanding the level of detail, thereby limiting time and cost exposures for the organisation.

The Right‑sizing tool is your Quality plan

The project manager can deviate from what the tool suggests by amending the list and record what is deemed necessary to deal with the project specific circumstances. If this list is reviewed and agreed with the project sponsor and quality manager (re time, cost, risks, etc.) it turns into your quality assurance plan, and would serve as a baseline for a quality audit if applicable.

What if you get the Right‑sizing wrong?

Of course this happens, but because the SmartMethod templates all use the same MS-Word styles, it is easy to re-jig information across documents without loss of formatting, and scale the set up or down.
