The scope of the SmartMethod covers the “do work” processes of software development as managed by a project management method (e.g. PRINCE2).

The SmartMethod is not a project management process.

However to ensure the project operates at CMMI level 2 or 3 time/cost performance the SmartMethod does impose specific practices for project management on the project manager (i.e. project planning, monitoring, risk management and sub-contractor agreement management). By defining for the PM how to deal with the management specifics of software development, the SmartMethod ensures the project can deliver realistically, on time, cost and to quality.

In picture, this is how the SmartMethod aligns with other business processes, and enforces due project management practices.

PB - Project Brief; PCR – Project Close-out Review; BRR - Benefit Realisation Review.
